June Pre-loved giveaway is Empress Orchid by Anchee Min

Open to UK and International readers.

You can now contact me/enter the giveaway via my new form Fill out my form!

My review is below

This book was not at all what I expected. It is centered around the Emperor of China and her quest to rid herself and her family of poverty and marrying her unsavoury cousin.

we start at the beginning of Orchids life, briefly one sentence and then the memory of the loss of her father and how her family tries to get him to his respectful resting place with very little funds to do so. With no financial or materialistic prospects the only solution is to marry her 'slope-shouldered cousin' at the age of seventeen and help her family from their dire situation. Orchid puts herself forward to try and become one of the Emperors low ranking comcubines with little expectation of success.

There in follows the trials and tribulations of the phases of selection and the humiliating, trying process of which she feels little chance of success. The story takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotion as Orchid tries to come to terms with the changes in her life, the competitions and the jealousy and danger the life of a concubine has to offer.

I really enjoyed reading this and learning of different rules/rituals of another country and their journey to ruling. I felt sorry, admiration and sometimes frustration for the main character and ended up not wanting to put the book down to find out what happened to her, did she overcome her enemys or succome to their treachery. A good a griping read once you get into it. 4/5 for me

Review - Valley Of The Dolls by Jacqueline Susann

Synopsis from the back cover

Dolls - red or black, capsules or tablets, washed down with vidka or swallowed straight. For Anne, Neely and Jennifer, it doesn't matter as long as the pill bottle is within reach. These three beautiful women become best friends when they are young and idealistic and struggling at the bottom of the ladder of the entertainment industry.

By the time they reach the top, they discover there's no place left to go but down - into the Valley of the Dolls.

My review

LOVED IT! Introducing Anne and her humble beginnings and the blossoming friendship between herself and the starlets Neely and Jennifer. The story goes off pretty much in each chapter in depths into each character and their lives to present. We start off with fairly ordinary girls, each trying to get what they want out of life and their trials and experiences getting there.

Then introducing the dolls and how they play a part in each characters life.

I initially liked Anne, Neely and Jennifer but as the story went on and the choices they went with I found myself annoyed and frustrated with each character for different reasons. By the end of the book I dont know who I disliked more Neely or Anne. One for the bitchiness and the other for pretty much being a doormat although I understand it was a different time but still!

Regardless of how, at some points, some of the characters annoyed me I did totally love this book. I loved the easy way it was written and how the characters where portrayed and even though in some parts you hated how they behaved you could still related to them in one sense or another.

5 out of 5 for me.

Review - Tough Love by Kerry Katona

For me this read like a Jordan meets a tame Martina Cole novel, basically junk food for the brain and I loved it!

Meet Leanne Crompton the storys main character. She finds her celeb style world turned upside down when she loses her job as a glamour model. Having to provide for herself and daughter and until she gets back on her feet she has to go home to her less than desirable family and roots.

The press have always been intreaged with her daughters fathers identity, now that Leanne has fell on tough times will she sell him out and get what she deserves.

It has fights, bitchness and memorable characters. I also found myself likening some of the characters to people Kerry has rubbed shoulders with in the real celeb world and just how much from that she used when making her characters.

Light and enjoyable 4/5 for me.

Review - The Whole Wide Beauty by Emily Woof

I really, really had wanted to love this book but it just wasn't anything near what I hoped it would be. The story starts with Katherine Freeman and introducing her life as it is and her parents and husband. What she does and loves and her relationship with her husband. It moves between that and her father, his life and relationships and then her mother. Every now and then its the husband and child.

There wasn't any big pull in the story, after a while we have some excitement when she longs for something that could ruin her whole family life and spill over into her fathers. There is also a revelation with a secret her father has had and the potential for the story to erupt but it didn't come. I thought the slow buildup and link to the family was due to a big plot that was just taking a while to get into but sadly it wasn't to be.

The book is fairly easy to read but I didn't connect with any of the characters and felt it was lacking although the potential I felt was there. Only a 2/5 for me.

Review Zombicorns by John Green (ebook)

Never take it as the cover might actually have any relevance to the book your about to read. I assumed there was going to be a unicorn or unicorns but nope not to be. The story had a few letters missing every so often from words and symbols in place which made it hard to read in some parts (this may have been an error or when I saved the .pdf to text (although this hasn't happened before).

The story itself was different (in the way the virus is brought about, the zombies themself quite a bit actually). It isn't meant to be taken serious(it isn't written with bulk or a beginning or end really) and it is a novella. At the start it does say there will be many questions with no answers so don't expect anything from this book at all.

It isn't particularly gorey, it certainly isn't a page turner and to be honest I am not sure where or what I would rate it as however overall a 2 of 5.

Review - Hot Blood And Cold Ashes by Jude Atkins

Blurb from the website
The body of a young Native girl found stripped and staked out has the Vancouver police department desperate to solve the crime before sparks of racial tension divide the community. Native Support Worker Jesse Dancer is called in as a liaison between detectives and his community, and he knows just where to turn for help.
Beautiful Martine LaChance has intrigued him since she joined the support staff at Friendship Centre. Together, the pair call on Spirit Water, the sexy Medicine Man who's more than a casual acquaintance of Jesse's. When another murder raises the stakes even higher, passions flare and boundaries are tested.
My review

I think the first thing I have to say is this is an adult themed novel, if graphic words and adult content offends you this is not the book for you.  I have only read one other Erotic fiction and it was very different to this one.  It is very graphic right from the beginning so you will quickly know if it is for you or not.  The sex scenes are very graphic and even I was a bit shocked by just how graphic and descriptive it was.

I loved the Indian rituals (something I haven't read about before) and the insight into it, meditation, smoke and visions (amoungst other adult content).  The murder story was pretty good too, very easy to read and follow and no complicated twists.

It felt a bit bizarre as it was murder tangled in with very adult scenes but it didn't detract from the story although the two could have been different books as it didn't go hand in hand (I felt) it certainly didn't take away from the story.

This is a pretty quick read and I finished it in one sitting.  3/5 for me and I would try this author again.

The other good thing about these books is once you are done, if you submit a review for the author and from where you bought it they send you another ebook of your choice from the website.

Review - The Fight Of Our Lives by William J. Bennett & Seth Leibsohn

In The Fight Of Our Lives, William J. Bennett and Seth Leibsohn examine the devolution of American's post-9/11 tenacity and how this country's well-meaning culture or religious tolerance, coupled with soft anf apologetic leadership, has placed us squarely in the pocket of radical Islamists who have made clear their intention to obliterate everything we value.

-------------------

My thoughts - For me this book was not an easy read! I am by no means up to date on politics and to be honest never have been so I found a lot of it I had to google just to understand the references and context. There is a fair of the book I found interesting and was amazed at how strongly these two feel in regards to the President(and his views/promises pre election) and the attitudes of the American people towards terrorists and how terminology is carefully applied whereas the authors want to call it as they see it (terror = terrorist).

This for me is a controvertial book as I feel it will definately upset some people whilst others will no doubt agree with the authors. I would recommend it to others as it is certainly a subject worth reading/debating about. (3 of 5 rating on here as I found it ok, ok rating is a 2 on other sites).

I was given this book by booksneeze (bloggers review program), I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Review - The Burning Wire by Jeffery Deaver

A very short review for me this time.

I started off really disliking this book.  Although the idea of how the murders is committed is pretty genius for me it was a little too complicated and boring when it got down to how it actually happened.

Lincoln as always is a great character along with Sachs which kept my interest held along with his usual struggles with his condition and the management of it.

About half way through the book started to really pick up for me and then the twists and action at the end is what bumped it up from a 2 to a 3 for me.

Review - Diary In The Attic by Cindy L. Freeman

I recieved this book from Dorrance books http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?dorrance+7XZRvv+index.html

I received a complimentary copy of (Diary In The Attic) as a member of the

Our main character Margaret Monroe is set in her ways, she has her routine and likes it just so.  So on a Friday night after a rough day at work and an arguement with her older aloof colleague she is looking forward to her ritual.  It is rudely interupted by a phone call and beeping answering machine, not to be disturbed she ignores it.  What follows throws her whole night into turmoil.

Her colleague has been fatally injured in a car crash and is calling out for Margaret from her death bed.  Curiousity and a sense of duty calls her too answer(not to mention guilt from their earlier quarrel).  Corrine is slipping in and out of conscience and some of what she is saying doesn't sit with Margaret.  More so when Corrines mother is found dead and Corrine had her fatal accident fleeing the scene.

Did she do it?  Margaret doesn't know but feels she owes it to her to find out, with the help of her co worker and an attractive police office they find the diary in the attic and the answers to all of their questions.

This was a really easy read, I finished it in one sitting.  It isn't a thriller and certainly not the best book I have read but it was enjoyable and held my attention.  The only thing you may find off putting or even annoying is how it jumps from present day to the past without any real reason or seeming relevance to what is happening in that point of the story.  It does give more information and insight into each of the characters however it delays finding out the next part of the story when I really wanted to know about that diary.

All in all a good and easy read so 3/5 for me.

Can be bought here http://dorrance.stores.yahoo.net/diaryinattic.html paperback for the US or as a ebook for anywhere else in the world

Review- Holding On To Heaven by Keta Diablo

Synopsis from amazon.co.uk

When the blazing fires of revolt ravage the countryside, Lauren and Sage McCain are trapped amid the flames of destiny. The Civil War has crumbled a Nation, and the Dakota Sioux uprising has turned southern Minnesota into a violent battlefield.

Holding on to Heaven is a story of love between two men and a woman, love between siblings, and love that crosses all boundaries and forges all cultures.

My review

When I picked this book and it was offered as erotic fiction I wasn't too sure what to expect, certainly a lot of sex and not too much else if I am honest.  I could not have been more wrong!  Yes there are scenes of passion (which some might find graphic) but there is so much more to this story.

The characters are introduced so well you immediately bond with them (you might not like every one of them) but you can identify with them if nothing else.  The main character is Lauren and we follow her life from birth to present day and everything it brings with it.

From love and first attraction, to war, murder and depravity.  Family reunions, devotion and the heartache and love that goes with it.  I read this in one sitting, I did not want to put it down as I was dying to find out what happened to just about every character.

This is my first time reading this author and I will certainly be going back for more.  I was entertained, kept on the edge of my seat and really enjoyed just about every aspect of this book.  The only draw back for me was when it ended, I wanted it to keep going and I think that is just about the biggest compliment you can get for a story.  5/5 for me.

Review - Belle by Lesley Pearse

You know a book is good when your up hours past bedtime with your nose stuck in it!

Belle is a 15 year old child, very innocent despite being brought up in a brothel.  Her mother worked hard to ensure Belle was kept in the dark about the goings on and succeeded for the most part.  However it all comes crashing down when Belle finds out in the most awful way first hand and is put in danger.

There follows a harrowing journey through the criminal world and the horror that Belle is subjected to.  This book is very graphic in some places and makes for tough reading at some points however you can't help but go on.  I was gripped practically from the start, following Belles progress and how she copes/survives and the journey of her loved ones who never gave up on her or the hope that she is still alive.

5/5 for me.

-----------------------------

my review

I am torn between giving this a 2 or 3 star rating.  The start of the book was fine, fairly decent pace to getting the story started and building a bit of background.  However I feel that it took an age to get to the good stuff and it dragged a lot.  There was quite a few things going on, psychic vibrations and mediums so you thought the ghost aspect was going to be quite big (in a sense it was but not what I exected given from the blurb on the back).  Also there was a lot of individual side stories going on which does happen in a lot of books but normally they get to a huge build up and they all link in together, I don't feel this happened in this book.

There was a lot that I felt didn't need to be in the story and it was a bit pointless although some of it did link up near the end but it took forever to get there.  The last say quarter of the book it did really pick up though and it kicked off and became exciting which is where I feel a 3 rating is justified but getting there was a slog which is why I considered a 2.

I have read MHC a few times and really enjoyed her books but this one for me was hardwork and dare I say it a bit boring until the latter part of the book.  It won't put my off reading anymore of her books and I did in the end enjoy it it just took far too long to get to the point, 3/5 for me.

May Pre-loved giveaway is Promise Me by Harlan Coben (UK and Inter)

Open to UK and International readers.

Entries here please Fill out my form!

My Review for this book is below

Myran Bolitar and his trusty sidekick Win are on another case. This time it isn't one of their clients, it's a friends loved one who seems to have vanished and Myron was the last one with her.

The story really kicks off when Myron is called in the early hours of the morning by his friends teenage daughter whom he promised if she needed help no questions asked just call. He gets more than he bargains for when he drops her off at an unknown address and she goes missing. The police have their suspicions and Myron is the number one suspect, it doesn't look good. Myron starts digging to find out what happened to Aimee and if it is linked to another girls disappearance and gets caught up in a tangled web of danger, murder and family secrets.

This is the 8th book in a series although you don't necessarily have to have read the previous books to follow this one and it does give you a history on the business and his relationships with Win and his co workers. Good paced, easy to follow and some pretty good unexpected twists. 4/5 for me.

This giveaway will be open until the end of May, good luck.
